A woman lying on an iguana begins to absorb the lizard’s
skin patterns. Insects become humans and morph back again into insects.
Who or what will be the last species on earth? These images and issues
are explored when DONNA STERNBERG & DANCERS premieres
Lying on Iguanas, a full evening-length work. Lying
on Iguanas examines the paradoxical relationship humans
have with the natural environment, on the one hand admiring its beauty
and diversity and on the other being a participant in its destruction. The
genesis of the work began when Ms. Sternberg was awarded an artist
residency in Costa Rica and met fellow resident artist Kathi Packer,
whose visual art deals with the earth’s
fragile ecosystem. Traveling through the country with its myriad
and diverse ecosystems. the two artists decided to collaborate on
this project. They have designed a set that evolves throughout the
work and Ms. Packer’s paintings
have inspired themes and images in the dance. Prior to the performance
at 7:30 p.m. there will be a panel discussion with environmental
experts moderated by Dr. Charles Kopczak, curator of ecology at the
California Science Center. The focus on the environment could not
be more timely, and the combination of the panel discussion and performance,
focusing on the same environment issues from different perspectives,
ensures a lively and stimulating evening.
